Falino stresses the importance of maintaining high energy and the importance of passing this along to your staff and students.

In any given school, there is a varying degree of motivation in each teacher. Unfortunately, it seems as though some veteran teachers are those who tend to have the least amount of energy. I find this unfortunate as they have the most experience and could probably be the best leaders if they still had the motivation to learn and try new things. On the other hand, the younger teachers frequently have energy and motivation, but do not yet have enough experience to know how to channel it. This provides a difficult situation for principals and how to balance this.
I believe that for a school to go from good to great it must recognize its struggling students and come up with a unified strategy to handle those situations. I feel in great schools all students succeed and meet the goals set by the teachers and administrators. Everyone comes together to promote learning, with expectations that students will excel, and support is provided to make it happen. The coming together of IEP and IST teams addresses the needs of the whole struggling student, reduces everyone's frustration level, and ensures the student's success. These teams also work together to identify the resources needed and help the teacher with using those resources.

In my school, we have IST teams that meet when a need arises and are requested by a parent or teacher. The team comes together to identify the needs of the student, brainstorm possible strategies, and develop a plan for both home and school, What I really like about the process is, after a reasonable length of time, everyone comes back to share feedback, reevaluate the plan, and set new goals.

I feel it says a lot about a great school when professionals are readily available to ensure the success of all it's students. Three years ago I was on the Middle School Learning Support team that was comprised of 3 emotional support teachers and 3 learning support teachers. We would meet regularly every other Friday to have uniform expectations for the students with things such as point sheets, classroom goals, homework routines, and transition rules. The first year was a little bumpy but that was expected because the environment for the students was changing and things need to be “tweeked” now and then. By the second year the students displayed less behavior issues and were performing above the set expectations.

Last year I was moved to the high school program, this meant that our meetings consisted of 7 academic teachers and 7 vocational teachers. The meetings were not successful and the school year was definitely a struggle for the students and even myself at times. Some of the teachers were stuck in the “old” mentality of the team, others were worried too many changes would increase behavior problems, and lastly some were against combining to be “One” team.

The start of this school year has seen another change, this time in the program’s location. Most of us feel it is better for the students, since we are all in one building instead of two, but there was still some negativity that things were not as structurally prepared as last year. At the end of last week I made a “treat” bag for all the staff in hopes to share with them the success I felt that we made it through the first week! That although some of the routines that were put in place by the administration were not the most time effective in our eyes, what was wonderful was the fact that we all gave our student the same message “This is new for all of us, things may change, but we will do this together. “ I have to say what I heard Friday at our meeting with just a few members was that despite everything else our students really exceeded our expectations and showed how excited they were to be in this new building.
Collaboration is essential - and kids see when we are working together.

This quote is the most important for me because if you do not have teachers who are motivated or passionate about teaching, you don't have much to work with. When teachers are motivated by their leaders and administrators it makes them want to work harder and succeed. If students see that a teacher is not motivated, the attitude will reflect on the class. This can make or break your school; teachers determine whether or not your school is successful.

My first job was a music teacher at a special education school. I loved the students and almost everyone who worked there. My principal at the school was very abrasive and could not work well with others. She did not listen to teachers' ideas at staff meetings and shot down their thoughts on trying to better the school. It was her way or the highway, which created a negative atmosphere among the teachers and staff. This caused many negative behaviors with the students, as well.
