\n
\nI think this will have an impact on high school principals in the near future. I would think that people are aware of their school district's high school drop out rates and would assume that those students are not prepared for the workforce when they leave school early. On the other hand, when a child has spent the last 12 years attending school and are about to graduate, it is expected that they are prepared for college or the workforce. Data has shown us that our expectation is not accurate and we have high school graduates who aren't ready for the workforce either. Principal's will need to be concerned with where to "squeeze" this curriculum in, along with all the "normal" classes (and all the standardized testing) required for a graduating senior.
\nI think this is becoming noticeable now due to the economic climate, decline in success of college students obtaining a job, and a shift in societal changes (importance of an education to families).","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"65361256","body":"I think that schools need to and are shifting more towards the "whole child" again. I read an article about the top traits companies are looking for when hiring new graduates. Not a single one was a skill that was tested on standardized tests. Energy, collaboration, and communication were all top on the list. The problem is that these qualities are almost impossible to assess with a written standardized form. I think (and hope) that more rubrics will be used to assess students' qualities.","dateCreated":"1379975683","smartDate":"Sep 23, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"MartineSiravo","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/MartineSiravo","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"65366750","body":"Part of the issue here is that we spend a lot of time teaching stuff that kids (and adults) can just look up online - stuff that can be Googled. I think that one of the most important findings in the poll was the general opinion against so much testing and wanting to, in fact, focus more on the whole child.
\n
\nI think that this will cause significant stress for administrators to balance the pressures from government and district officials against the wishes of parents and the public. What principals will have to implement in their schools in terms of curriculum and assessment might not be what parents are hoping to have in their schools. And unfortunately, some parents aren't aware of the state being in control of standards and assessments.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"65366866","body":"It's kind of interesting to see how far the pendulum has swung with opposition to testing. This has been the first question on the poll asked without a prompt for forty-five years so that the responses are not affected by other questions. The poll reports the lack of financial support continues to be the greatest problem facing public schools. Overcrowding is seen as the second biggest problem. I believe that it is imperative for school leaders to have a finger on the pulse of public opinion especially because they are the stewards of the public tax dollars. The poll reports a high grade for local schools, the highest ever, and a vote against closing local schools to save money even if enrollment is declining.
\n
\nA successful leader has vision and strives to create change in order to cause continuous improvement. Possessing the results of this poll can help a principal to better develop a strategic plan for improvement in each school. Funding and overcrowding can not be the sole focus of change but they are important factors to consider. The challenges listed in the poll are not insurmountable nor can they be solved overnight. They certainly can be where a principal may choose to start to influence and model for the school and local community.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"65366908","body":"We'll see this issue in action at Tuesday's school board meeting. Two out of three Americans support new public charter schools. Since these new options (charter schools) are available for students, parents find charter schools more convenient and show better results than most public schools.
\n
\nAs a school leader the image of your school may be flawed by a charter school or parents may ask what your school has to offer over the charter schools within the area. This affects public schools immensely because they will lose funding, as well as, a decrease in numbers. Even though I work at a public charter school, I feel that you should choose a school that works best for you and your child.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"65361218","body":"I agree that charter schools should be an option for your child.
