Schmoker discusses how important it is to "share and refine the collective wealth of what teachers already know" (115). By having strong professional learning communities in one's school, teachers are more likely to want to succeed and strive to work harder. Schmoker states "loyalty runs strongest at the smallest unit- the team" (114). I know personally that working on a strong team allows me to challenge myself and learn more about topics that I might not know as much about.
\n
\nWe discussed this idea in class when we talked about how much professional development time can unfortunately be wasted. I have had a variety of experiences under several different administrators, and I have honestly seen principals that enact every single tenet of Schmoker's philosophy. I have also seen professional development time completely and utterly wasted. There is no doubt that the focus of creating and fostering meaningful PLC's will be one of the biggest goals of mine as a future administrator.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"67472372","body":"Sometimes the best form of PD is the gift of time for teachers to collaborate. According to Mike Schmoker, the Professional Learning Community has proven to be the "most agreed upon means by which to continuously improve instruction and student performance." My role as principal is to set the ground rules for the teachers and monitor their progress. Professional Learning Communities must consist of teams of levelized teachers who are focused on a common curriculum and instruction, include common assessments based on common standards, and drive instruction through data obtained from assessment results. I must monitor the teams to ensure that regular scheduled meetings occur and that teachers are focused on instruction and adjusting assessments based on the results. I must support the teacher by building schedules that allow for teacher collaboration, attending the PLC meetings, and obtaining any needed resources. My main focus is to be sure that the focus in on instruction, learning, and assessment.
\n
\nThe PLC will help to enhance teaching and learning in my school because the teacher will be given opportunities to collaborate and pull their ideas. The accountability of the team will be motivatonal. I will support and celebrate the PLC's accomplishments with praise and positive feedback. I will monitor the team's progress by attending the PLC meetings, reviewing the assessment results, and evaluating the teachers based on clear criteria. The students will benefit from learning from effective instruction and rigorous curriculum in a safe school environment.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"66864822","body":"Allocating time for this type of work is important - it can also be challenging for the leader.","dateCreated":"1383618769","smartDate":"Nov 4, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"DrSal","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/DrSal","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1289772999\/DrSal-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"64703486","dateCreated":"1383517942","smartDate":"Nov 3, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"kmw007","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kmw007","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/cabriniaspiringleaders.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/64703486"},"dateDigested":1532253145,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Karen","description":"One element from the Schmoker text that I believe to be the most significant and meaningful to me in my development as an instructional leader is that professional development should be utilized as a learning experience for teachers. Every opportunity that can be used to better our schools and teachers is precious and important. Professional learning communities or PLCs are a great way to meet regularly with your teaching teams to create a common curriculum, pass around ideas for classroom management, and create common assessments.
\n
\nThis practice will help to enhance teaching and learning within my school because it will motivate teachers to try new methods in their own classrooms, combine ideas on common assessments, and create a common curriculum for each grade level or subject. Professional development days will be more meaningful than just the principal addressing instructional needs. I believe that teachers can become more creative as a group than just as an individual, which will help the team\u2019s dynamic and create a stronger relationship between grade levels. It will also improve upon student learning, because teachers can address the difficulties they may have with certain classes or students with concepts or ideas that may be new to them. All of these reasons combined will enhance teaching and student learning within my future school.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"66864744","body":"Why do you believe that the concept of a PLC will be motivating to your teachers?","dateCreated":"1383618608","smartDate":"Nov 4, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"DrSal","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/DrSal","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1289772999\/DrSal-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"67139500","body":"PLCs will motivate teachers to collaborate with others and to improve upon their teaching and ideas that are implemented in the classroom.
