It allows them to "get the right people on the bus". There were a long list of qualities that we brainstormed for hiring quality teachers, and we didn't even seem to exhaust the list. We kept going back to that discussion of whether great teachers are "born or made". It's my personal opinion that great teachers are born. That being said, every great teacher has areas for improvement, and every great teacher needs experience and change to mold their own style and philosophy. However, I also believe that there are people who are not meant to be teachers, and could not be successful in the classroom even with an infinite amount of training.

\nI found the differences between processes in different districts most surprising. I have also experienced this first hand, but it is interesting to me how much autonomy vs. lack of control different districts give to administrators. As a principal, I would most definitely prefer to have more control over the people that I am hiring for my own building. That being said, however, I do understand that many times teachers get transferred into other buildings. The district probably responded to this by providing rubrics and questions to ensure that all hirees fit a certain "mold".","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"66582250","body":"You'll probably come back to this discussion during the supervision course - can we improve everyone will be an important question to consider.","dateCreated":"1382931811","smartDate":"Oct 27, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"DrSal","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/DrSal","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1289772999\/DrSal-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"64345634","dateCreated":"1381798382","smartDate":"Oct 14, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"sblowe","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/sblowe","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/cabriniaspiringleaders.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/64345634"},"dateDigested":1532253146,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Susan","description":"The two aspects of our discussion that I believe would contribute in a positive manner to hiring quality teachers is the demonstration lesson and contacting the applicants references. The demonstration lesson, in my opinion, speaks volumes about the teacher. The creativity in design, energy level, and student engagement during the lesson can all be measured. The interaction between the teacher and the students when they first meet and as the lesson develops is important to experience before a person is hired in a classroom. The hiring committee can determine a lot of background information by contacting the applicants references. It is important to be informed about the applicants past experiences. Work ethic and innovation are important traits for any teacher and references can provide good insight into these topics.

\nThe "behind the scenes" aspect of the hiring process that I found the most surprising was all the preliminary work and research that takes place while searching the PAREAP website. All the time and energy it takes to study the many applicants and choose the few for the interviewing process is astounding. It is a great responsibility to choose the applicants that are real contenders for the position.
\nGreat principals want exceptional teachers in their schools and it is obvious to me that hiring teachers is not an exact science.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"66087382","body":"It's amazing when you think about it that we have so often hired teachers sight unseen when it comes to their actual teaching ability!","dateCreated":"1381804714","smartDate":"Oct 14, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"DrSal","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/DrSal","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1289772999\/DrSal-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"64339690","dateCreated":"1381773722","smartDate":"Oct 14, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"kmw007","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kmw007","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/cabriniaspiringleaders.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/64339690"},"dateDigested":1532253146,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Karen","description":"Our discussion about hiring outstanding teachers was very interesting. It made me think about what I bring to the table when I am at an interview and how I give my answers to the administrators. I need to incorporate more experiences that relate to the questions and I also need to elaborate more on my answers so that there is no question on my abilities and experience.

\nTwo aspects of our discussion that I believe would contribute in a positive manner to hiring quality individuals are the outline of the hiring process and what to look for in an outstanding teacher. I liked that we were able to see the administrative side of using PAREAP and also being shown what certification is needed for a teacher in a specific position. When looking for an outstanding teacher they need to have the correct certification, experience, willingness, and flexibility. These two aspects of the hiring process would help any administrator in looking for a quality teacher.

\nSomething about the hiring process that was most surprising to me was that there is no science to the hiring process. It truly depends on the individual that is on the hiring team and what they want in a specific position. This made me realize that they may not always want someone who just \u201cfits the mold,\u201d but they would want someone who is going to branch out and do new things for the school.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"66087424","body":"Excellent insights.
