Within the clip, Dunder Mifflin's boss Michael Scott is shown "leading" in a variety of ways. The first of which is when he calls employees to the conference room at the very end of the day for a meeting. Michael clearly has no agenda for this meeting and rather wants to waste everyone's time. One can see through the clip that the employees are irritated and agitated. Michael is inappropriate and unprepared for the meeting, resulting in employees walking out before the meeting is officially over. This type of leadership shows that Michael had no respect from his employees, nor does he value their time. Schmoker discusses the importance of using professional development time wisely, having clear and concise agendas for meetings, and being as productive as possible. None of these are occuring in the initial clip.

Later in the clip you can see Michael insulting and even berating some of his employees. This attitude causes the employees to harbor resentment towards him. One can also see Michael Scott attempting to "befriend" the employees in a variety of ways. While he teeters between this idea of being the "enforcer" and being everyone's "friend", he never really achieves his goal to be an effective boss.

While many of the behaviors in these clips are exaggerated and meant to be funny, they provide excellent "non-examples" for how to be an effective leader. Through Michael Scott's inappropriate comments to his employees, his "top-down" styles of handing out mandates, and his overall lack of knowledge about his company, it is clear that Michael Scott is an excellent example of a completely ineffective leader.
I would agree that there were lots of non-examples of effective leadership. It took place in Virginia during segregation of public schools. The focus of the movie was on the forced integration of the High School football team and their triumphs on and off the field during the season. This particular clip showed Gary B and Julius C have a heated discussion after one of their football practices. Julius questions Gary's leadership as Gary questions Julius attitude. Julius response was "Attitude reflects leadership, Captain."

I feel as an administrator this is a key component to acquiring staff's respect and establishing a positive school climate in the building. Being a leader means you set the expectations for others but in order to do that you must hold yourself to those same standards.
Miracle" movie. The first clip was of the Olympic Hockey Committee interviewing Coach Brooks for the position of coaching the 1980 Olympic Ice Hockey team. It was so obvious from the beginning, even before he was chosen for the position, that he had a vision. He was working on a game plan as he sat in the waiting room before the interview. This speaks to his work ethic, determination, and level of preparation. He described how he wanted to change the way they played the game. He was not afraid to set and reach for a very ambitious goal. The second video was of Coach Brooks' speech to the team before their game with the Soviets. It was here that I feel he empowered his players. He demanded excellence and challenged his players on all levels. Coach Brooks was very good at putting the right people in the right seats. At one point in the movie, he told the Olympic Committee that he was not going to fill the roster with the "best" talent, but with the "biggest" hearts. Coach Brooks faced opposition and pressure from those in authority over this decision, yet he held onto his values and chose to do what was right; not popular. Coach Brooks thought outside the box. He decided to challenge the Soviets to an exhibition game before the Olympics. This was never done before in the ice hockey organization. He used this game as a learning experience for both himself and his players.

I believe this outstanding leadership approach would be very effective in my school. I know that to be great change must first begin with a well defined vision and game plan. Great work ethic, determination, and a high level of preparation are all necessary to maintain the momentum through the tough times. An empowered faculty who is placed where their strengths are being used to their fullest is the vehicle to success. I feel being a leader who does what is right and not popular will challenge us all to move from good to great.
I absolutely love the clips that you selected. Mr. Burns did not care about what his employees had to say about improving the work place and how to increase productivity. Also, he put the name of the power plant in a bird’s name so that all of the blame would be put on the bird instead of himself. He chose to not be held accountable for his company or actions.

This style of leadership would not be an effective approach at my school. Showing staff that you don’t care what they have to say would not be productive with your staff relationships. Teachers and staff may have ideas that could be utilized to raise morale or to increase learning. It is much better to listen to someone’s ideas than to ignore them. Also, if no one was held accountable for their actions at school, nothing would ever get accomplished. Everyone has a job to do and a part to play.

The lessons I've learned from my video clip will make me think about how I treat others. Everyone deserves respect and should be shown that they are appreciated. Ideas can come from anywhere and they should be heard. Accountability is so important for a school leader. If something goes wrong it always comes back to the principal. As a leader, you have to be responsible for your actions and others actions as well. It is important to model what you expect from others.
How you treat others - and how others PERCEIVE the way that they are being treated - is critical.
